I was not organized, while my roommate Lucy was extremely neat. Each of her objects had its place, but mine always hid somewhere. She even labeled everything. I always looked for everything. tired of each other.
War broke out one evening. Lucy came into the room. Soon, I heard her screaming, “Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!” Deafened, I saw my shoes flying at me. I jumped to my feet and started yelling. She yelled back louder.
The room was filled with anger. We could not have stayed together for a single minute but for a phone call. Lucy answered it. From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away her grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up, she quickly crawled under her covers, sobbing. Obviously, that was something she could not go through. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy rose up in my heart.
Slowly, I collected the pencils, took back the books, made my bed, cleaned the socks and swept the floor, even on her side. I got so into my work that I even didn’t notice Lucy had sat up. She was watching, her tears dried and her expression one of disbelief. Then, she reached out her hands to grasp mine. I looked up into her eyes. She smiled at me, “Thanks.”
Lucy and I stayed roommates for the rest of the year. We didn’t always agree, but we learned the key to living together: giving in, cleaning up and holding on. 4. How is Paragraph 1 mainly developed? A. By analyzing causes. C. By describing a process.

推理判断题。根据第一段内容“I was never very neat, while my roommate Lucy was extremely organized. Each of her objects had its place, but mine always hid somewhere. She even labeled everything. I always looked for everything. Over time, Lucy got neater and I got messier. She would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. We both got tired of each other.(我从来不讲究整洁,而我的室友Lucy却非常有条理。

On the outside, 12-year-old Luna seems like an average kid. It’s not until you get to know her that you learn that Luna is anything but average.
Born with a heart defect (缺陷) called dextrocardia, Luna has had three open-heart operations and continues to pursue (追求) her interests in art and fashion. But when Luna was approached by sport shoe company Saucony to design a shoe for sale across the country, it came as quite a surprise.
“This is so incredible. I got to use my art and creativity for something new that I’d never thought I’d be able to design,” Luna said. She is one of six patients from Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH) who have partnered with Saucony to design their own shoes to launch the “Shoes with Soul” campaign.
“Rather than just a donation we wanted to create an experience and a moment that would raise not only money, but also awareness to highlight all the amazing work that’s being done at BCH,” says Chris, Saucony’s vice president. “Specifically, we wanted to give some of the BCH kids an opportunity to share their stories and their talents with the world.”
Luna’s design is fashion. “On the tongue, they digitalized one of my drawings, and then on bottom it’s a really bright pink color, and on the inside, the sole of the shoe is actually another drawing I did of a sunset,” she said. “Thinking about kids everywhere around the world wearing my shoes is amazing. It blows my mind.”
The income from the shoe sales will benefit the Boston Children’s Hospital Cardiac Fitness Program, which encourages kids to “find your possible” through personalized exercise programs tailored for each individual patient’s heart condition.

It’s cold and dark outside, and your bed is so warm and comfortable. Going for a run seems like such a bad idea. But before you put your running shoes away, it might be worth giving that crazy idea a try.
According to The Huffington Post,an outdoor run in winter, instead of running on a treadmill (跑步机), burns more calories (卡路里) because the body is working hard to regulate (调节) its temperature. Besides, research shows that race times are faster in cold weather than in warmer temperatures—and quicker runs burn more calories. Similarly, cold weather also makes the heart work harder to distribute blood through the body, making that vital muscle even stronger.
Outdoor exercise also turns up your energy and rids you of the stress and depression that build up every day. The heat and humidity in summer can drag you down and tire you faster, but cold weather is refreshing. It adjusts you to your surroundings, making you feel energetic.
Of course, the threat of smog in some built-up areas is a further problem to winter exercise. Heart attacks, strokes and lung cancer are all dangers of running in smog. The combination (结合) of air pollution and exercise increases the potential problems. If you do choose to run outside on smoggy days, take a path in a park or residential area to avoid polluted air, and go early in the morning, before rush hour. But staying inside on smoggy days and waiting for the next clear day to run is best.
12. How does cold weather benefit runners compared with warm weather?
A. They can run more slowly. C. Their hearts can work harder. 13. How does summer affect runners? A. It makes runners tired easily. C. It lessens runners’ stress.
B. They can take in more calories. D. Their body temperature can get lower.
B. It builds up their energy quickly. D. It causes heart attacks.
14. What are the runners supposed to do on smoggy days? A. Stop driving cars. C. Do more exercise.
B. Run late in the morning. D. Avoid outdoor exercise.
15. Which of the following opinion will be supported by the writer? A. We can refresh ourselves with a winter run. B. We should go to run in a park everyday.
C. It’s much better to take outdoor exercise in summer. D. We’d better run on treadmill to reduce stress. 【答案】12. C 13. A 14. D 15. A 【解析】 【分析】

It may sound a bit “Dr. Doolittle,” but it turns out kangaroos can communicate with humans. Researchers found that kangaroos communicated with humans “on purpose”--a behavior that was thought to only belong to domesticated(驯养的)animals, like dogs, horses or goats.
Experts from London's University of Roehampton and the University of Sydney set up a task. This task was known as “the unsolvable problem task”・ During the task, they presented kangaroos with food trapped inside a plastic container.
After trying, and failing, to open the boxes, the kangaroos turned their gaze(注视)on a nearby human - and sometimes even pushed or scratched(抓) them to ask for help, researchers said.
“Their gaze was pretty powerful, co-author Alexandra Green said. \"We've previously thought only domesticated animals try to ask for help with a problem. But kangaroos do it too. If they can't open the box, they look at the human and back to the container. Some of them use their nose to push the human and some get close to the human and start scratching at him asking for assistance.,,
Based on these new findings, the team believe kangaroos - considered social animals, like dogs and goats --may be able to change their behavior to interact with humans.
“Through this study, we are able to see that communication between animals can be learnt and that the behaviour of gazing at humans to get food is not related to domestication lead author Alan McElligott said.
“
Indeed, kangaroos showed a very similar pattern of behaviour we have seen in dogs, horses and even goats
when put to the same test,“ McElligott added.
12.What have the researchers found about kangaroos? A.Kangaroos can become domestic animals. B.Kangaroos can communicate with humans. C.Kangaroos can learn from domestic animals. D.Kangaroos have the same habits as domestic animals.

A Couch Potato
Forty-three-year-old Bob Black from Birmingham is sitting on his sofa and telling me about his perfect day. When I wake up I don't get up immediately.
I turn on the television and watch the children's programmes and old movies until about half-past ten. Then I get up, go downstairs and switch on the TV in the living room. For lunch, I have biscuits and a glass of milk, and I watch the news. In the afternoon, I often watch another old film – they're showing some good ones at the moment. In the evenings, I often watch TV series or sport and the news again. I like the main news at six o'clock. At half past nine, if there is a good play on BBC 2, I switch over and watch it. Then at night, I watch more films and I usually switch off the TV at about two o'clock. I never watch TV all night.
I watch TV for sixteen or seventeen hours a day. I also do some exercise every day. I take Tina, the dog, for a walk every afternoon. I don't go far, of course. I walk to the wall outside my house. I always take my portable TV and I sit on the stone wall while the dog walks round in a circle.
Of course, I couldn't live this lifestyle without a good wife. She's not here now because she's working, but she always makes my meals. We haven't got much money, you know, but we're happy. Sit down and watch TV. Here's the remote control. You've got the world at your feet. And in your hand. Great! 1.Which of the following statements can best explain the title “a couch potato” ?

Be a good tourist
Tourism can be both good or bad. Yes, it brings in money for the local economy and creates lots of jobs for locals, but it may also bring some problems.
One growing problem is tourists who want to prove that they have visited someplace. Tourists have used paint,
rocks or even keys to write on the Luxor Temple in Egypt, the Colosseum in Rome, Stonehenge in the UK, memorial stones at the bottom of Qomolangma, and many, many other places. Thousands of tourists sites are being destroyed by tourists who “love them to death”. I have three words for people like this: please stop it. If you want to leave a mark on the world, do it by changing someone’s life with kindness and love. Pass kindness along to future generations, not destruction.
Another big problem in some places has been tourists disturbing (打扰) the local people and life. Some tourists wander around and take pictures of local people without asking for their permission. For example, Chiang Mai University in Thailand and Yonsei University in South Korea have great numbers of tourists visiting their campuses and walking through their libraries and other public areas, taking pictures of students and disturbing their studies. I have three words for tourists like this: please be considerate. Have fun in a way that does not disturb others.
The number of problems from tourists is endless: walking in large groups without considering others who need to walk by, crossing roads without observing local traffic laws, and many more. The only way to solve the issue of the terrible tourist is to make sure that you are not one! Be the best, kindest, most polite tourist possible. Remember, whenever you step outside your country’s borders, you are representing (代表) your country to the rest of the world.
4.What does “them” in the second paragraph refer to? A.Memorial stones. C.Tourist spots.
B.Jobs for locals. D.Marks left by tourists.
5.What kind of mark does the writer suggest that tourists should take? A.Kind behaviour that can change someone’s life.
B.Love and destruction that will have an effect on future generations. C.A lot of money brought by tourism. D.Only beautiful pictures taken by tourists.
6.What does the writer intend to tell us by the third paragraph? A.Tourists can wander around and take pictures anywhere. B.Tourists should try not to cause trouble for local people and life.
C.For all universities, admission should be free and everybody is welcome. D.More university campuses should be open to the public.
7.According to the writer, what is the only way to solve the problem of the terrible tourist? A.Providing better service. C.Being a polite tourist. 【答案】 4.C 5.A 6.B 7.C 【分析】
本文为夹叙议文。在文章中作者例举、批判游客的一些不良行为并且针对这些行为给出建议,最后作者提出建议,解决糟糕游客问题的唯一方法就是我们要做一个有礼貌的游客。 4.

细节理解题。根据第二段“If you want to leave a mark on the world, do it by changing someone’s life with kindness and love. Pass kindness along to future generations, not destruction.(如果你想在世界上留下印记,那就用善良和爱来改变别人的生活。把善良传给下一代,而不是毁灭)”可知,作者建议游客们用善良和爱的行为给景点留下印记。故选A。

Avoiding a handshake may have been considered impolite a couple of years ago, but it is now getting more and more common, especially because of the outbreak of the novel Coronavirus( COVID-19) .
Health officials have expressed the importance of completely washing our hands and maintaining proper hand
hygiene. As a result, people around the world are creating alternatives for handshakes such as fist bumps and “elbow-bumps.”

Various rules regarding gender, relationship, and form also exist within these different countries. Officials in countries including France are recommending people avoid direct kisses.
Some other unique greetings include sniffing one another’s faces in native cultures in the island nations of Greenland and Tuvalu, sticking out one’s tongue in (a region of China), and clapping one’s hands in the African countries of Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
With the spread of COVID-19, people are getting creative with the ways they greet each other. A trend that has gained advantage is the “Wuhan Shake,” a greeting where two people gently bump each other’s feet with each foot.
Additionally, people, including famous figures like Prince Harry, US Vice President Mike Pence, and celebrities and athletes, have been giving up the formal handshake for elbow bumps.
Although officials have not clearly issued warnings against shaking hands, many doctors and health specialists have praised the handshake alternatives as a way to continue maintaining proper hygiene. 12.How do people commonly greet each other in India according to this passage ? By the rivers and under trees of rural South Auckland, New Zealand’s newest and most special school is in class.
The weather is fine, so the students would go fishing, and then they would cook lunch on a wild fire. What about homework and lectures? No. “We are called a school but we look nothing like any school out there,” says Joey Moncarz, co-founder and head teacher at Deep Green Bush School.
Moncarz used to be a teacher in the traditional schools. After five unhappy years there in New Zealand, he stopped to found Deep Green Bush School, which was kind of inspired by the Sudbury Valley School in the US. Now It has a roll of eight students, and no classroom walls or tests. Most importantly, he considered that traditional schools were not preparing children for the global problems of the future – such as climate change, so Moncarz founded Deep Green Bush School, a completely different kind of education, based on the skills of hunting, gathering and survival.
The more traditional school skills, such as reading, writing and maths, are learned at students’ own pace, after they begin showing an interest in them. Not, says Moncarz, when the teacher orders it is time to learn.
“We don’t have what you’d traditionally consider problem kids,” says Moncarz. “Our parents saw their kids were unhappy and stressed in traditional education and they started questioning: is it normal or right for kids to come home stressed and unhappy?”
Moncarz insists that the school isn’t an “experiment” in education, and is based on two million years of evidence of how parents have raised their kids.
24. Where do students in Deep Green Bush School study? A. In the classroom.
B. At home.
C. In the wild.
D. On the Internet.
25. What’s Moncarz’s main purpose of founding Deep Green Bush School? A. To stop his unhappy teaching years. B. To compete with the traditional schools. C. To research how parents raise their kids.
D. To prepare children for the future global problems.
26. When do students of Deep Green Bush School learn traditional school skills? A. After teachers order study time. B. After students have interest in them. C. As soon as students come into the school. D. As soon as students finish learning the basic skills.
27. What can we infer from the passage? A. All the students in schools are stressed. B. Moncarz had fun teaching in traditional schools. C. Deep Green Bush School is the first special school. D. Some parents may be unsatisfied with traditional schools. 【答案】24. C 25. D 26. B 27. D 【解析】

We are often told to pay attention to what our mothers tell us. Most of us enjoy listening to our mothers speaking. Scientists at Stanford University, US have found that compared to other people’s voices, our brains react strongly to our mother’s voices.
The scientists examined 24 children aged 7 to 12 and asked their mothers as well as two mothers whose children were not studied to record three nonsense words.“In this age period, most children have good language skills. We didn’t want to use words that had meaning because that would have involved(涉及) many different parts in the brain,”said Professor Menon.
The children’s brains were scanned while they listened to the nonsense-word recordings, produced by their own mother and other mothers. Even from very short recordings, less than a second long, the children could make sure of their own mother’s voice with greater than 97 percent accuracy(正确率). Hearing their mother’s voice makes many parts of children’s brains more active, including those about positive emotion and social communication.
Years of study has shown that children prefer their mothers’ voices and it starts even before they’re born. When children are still in the womb (子宫) or have just been born they hear their mothers talking. This makes babies feel comfortable and safe and teaches them language and social skills, even though they are still very young. Later, when this sound is heard again, more attention is paid to it. 32. How many mothers were invited to enter the study? A. 12.
B. 24.
C. 26.

Taylor Pollard remembers when her younger sister, Kheris Rogers, was in first grade she once asked to stay in the bathroom longer---she hoped it would make her skin lighter. Kids were making fun of Rogers’ dark complexion. So Erika Pollard, the girls’ mom, moved Rogers to another school. Kids still made fun of her, but this time the kids bullying(霸凌)her were black.
Taylor Pollard wanted to help her sister feel good about herself. In 2017, she took a picture of Kheris. She posted it online. She wrote Kheris was “flexing in her complexion”. That is an expression their grandmother used often to encourage the girls to feel beautiful. Complexion means skin color. Flexing is a term for “showing off” or “showing pride”.
Then the sisters received many messages supporting Rogers and decided they wanted to direct that energy. Together, they came up with the idea of putting the message on a T-shirt Their business, Flexin’ In My Complexion, started shortly after that in April 2017. Erika gave the sisters about $100. Then their project got off the ground. They used some of the money to build a website. They also learned how to screen print T-shirts. The sisters set up shop in the garage behind their mom’s house in LA.
The sisters are co-CEOs. So far the sisters have sold more than 10,000 T-shirts. Flexin’ in My Complexion has
done more than make money for the sisters. It has also helped Rogers become confident. When she was being bullied, Rogers says she would come home from school upset.
“I would always come home crying; I would just have tears coming down my face,” she says. “My confidence is probably 10 million times higher right now. You have no way of knowing but my confidence back then was probably as low as it could be.”

Teenagers need to eat healthy food while they’re still young so that they will grow up to be healthy adults. Therefore, it is necessary for school cafeterias(食堂) to provide healthy food. With this in mind, the government has introduced a new food safety regulation that will improve health levels in schools.
The new regulation took effect on April 1. It requires those who are in charge of kindergartens, primary and secondary schools to eat with students in their cafeterias. Schools will also be required to make information regarding food sources and suppliers public.
The regulation also suggests that parents should eat with students at school in order to provide advice on food safety. Schools must find food safety problems and solve them in a timely manner.
If a school is caught buying low-quality food or failing to report food safety events, the people in charge of the school will be warned, fired or handed over to law enforcement(执法机关), the regulation says.
Parents across China have become increasingly angry about food safety events in schools, according to The Beijing News.
The most recent example occurred in March at the Chengdu No.7 High School Development School. Parents posted videos and photos of bad food that was served in the school’s cafeteria, China Daily reported. The school’s headmaster was eventually fired. In October, the head of an international school in Shanghai was fired after law enforcement found bad tomatoes and onions in the schools kitchen. 8.What does the new regulation require schools to do? A.Allow teachers and students to eat together. B.Improve the conditions of their cafeterias. C.Show the public where their food comes from. D.Build more than one cafeteria. 9.What do we know from Paragraph 3?

It’s hard to tum down a tasty banana. They taste good and you don’t have to wash them before eating them. However, British scientists say that the fruit may disappear by 2050.
One reason for this is climate change. Scientists at the University of Exeter collected data from 27 countries and regions that produce 86 percent of the world’s bananas. They found that climate change has improved growing conditions in 21 of these countries. In the past 60 years the average yield has reached 1.37 tons of bananas per hectare.
However, if temperatures keep rising, this advantage will disappear. Ten of the countries, including India, the world’s biggest producer of bananas, will produce fewer bananas. By 2050, the fruit may die out.
Shouldn’t bananas grow more easily if it’s hotter outside? In fact, the perfect temperature range for growing bananas is between 24℃ and 32℃. If temperatures get too high, they will stop growing.
Another reason for this phenomenon is diseases. Unlike other crops, the bananas we grow come from shoot cuttings rather than seeds. This means that all banana plants have the same genotype. In other words, if a disease is able to kill one plants it could kill them all.
One serious disease is called Panama. Caused by fungus(真菌)in the soil, it spreads easily. It has spread across South Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Australia. If one banana plantation suffers from the disease, it will take 30 years until it is able to grow bananas again. Scientists have not found a cure for this disease. 12.What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.People’s love for bananas.
C.The future disappearance of bananas.
B.The taste of bananas.
D.The convenience of eating bananas
13.What might happen if temperatures keep going higher? A.More countries will start to grow bananas. B.Bananas will not be able to grow any more. C.Bananas will grow better in most countries. D.Bananas won’t be as tasty as before.
14.How many reasons for the disappearing of bananas are mentioned in the text? A.Two.
B.Three.
C.Four.
D.Five.
15.What does Paragraph 5 tell us? A.What diseases bananas may suffer from. C.How diseases can easily kill bananas. 【答案】 12.C 13.B 14.A 15.C 【分析】
